
And then she almost dies, and returns to Phage Rock, filled with a renewed fondness for her home. She's duped into believing she's been recruited for SC, feels sorry for herself when her appearance is changed, conducts a disastrously ineffective kidnapping of Genar-Hofoen, gets spooked by the Grey Area's interpretation of the neural lace as a torture device, and then suddenly and inexplicably becomes an emotionally intelligent confidante to Dajeil, helping her to move past her anger and fear and finally meet with Genar-Hofoen. Now, of course, she's a unusually privileged member of The Culture, and so it shouldn't be at all surprising that she's a narcissistic hedonist, but what really bugs me is that she has such a pointless journey within the book. Banks goes to all the effort of introducing us, at great length, to this spoiled, entitled ingenue, fleshing out details of her interests (self-interest, mostly), while not bothering to give her any meaningful motivation beyond attaining status and having great sex. Ulver Seich is a dreadfully poorly developed character. Before I do, I'll caveat it by saying it doesn't stop me from loving the book, but it is a gripe that I picked up when I re-read it last week.
