Her first historical novel, “Time Enough for Drums,” was turned down by 10 publishers, all of whom claimed that children wouldn’t read history. Inspired her son’s interest in the Revolutionary War, she turned to historical fiction. In 1979, she finished a short story, “Term Paper,” that grew into the her first young adult novel of the same name. She began writing seriously when her two children were young, and though her novels were not successful, in 1969 she began a career as a newspaper columnist. Instead she became a secretary, then became a stay-at-home mother after marrying in 1960. Her mother died soon after she was born in 1934, and after a brief happy period with her aunt, uncle and cousins, she went to live with her father, four siblings and a stepmother.ĭiscouraged by her family from following her dreams - which included writing - she was not permitted to attend college after she finished high school. Her final notes highlight the historical facts utilized in writing this enjoyable tale.Throughout her life, Ann Rinaldi often was told no. Rinaldi sets up a nice tension between the two sisters, which strongly engages the reader. In contrast, the highly spirited Anne provides a more heroic view of family members and even credits her mother for the infamous patriotic quote, “Give me liberty or give me death.” This energetic girl strives to keep peace in the family and frequently asks herself, “Do you tell the truth when it will hurt someone you love?” A hard question for anyone, yet much more difficult for a child to answer. Patsy, the eldest daughter, describes the tragedies, problems, and secrets of the family, including the devastating mental breakdown of Patrick’s wife, Sarah.
